Adaland Mansion –a 10-minute drive away and well worth a visit.

Tygart Lake State Park is about a 20-minute ride, has a public dining room, boat docks, rental boats, swimming, picnicking, and camping areas. Access is through Grafton or, for those with their own boats, through the Pleasant Creek Hunting and Fishing Area. The latter has 40 tent and trailer sites and eight tent-only sites, each with fireplace, picnic table and garbage disposal. Public hunting and fishing in season. The Stonewall Jackson Resort has wonderful facilities and restaurants about a 30-minute drive away.

Augusta Heritage Center (link) at Elkins, WV, about a 40-minute drive away. This is Davis & Elkins College’s program for the Heritage Arts. Augusta provides instruction and performances, folklife programs, and a home for significant collections of field recordings, oral histories, photographs, instruments, and Appalachian art. Its year-round activities also include folklife research and documentation, production of films and audio recordings for a national audience, and outreach programs for young people and our local community. Augusta-sponsored activities in the community enrich the quality of life in the Elkins area year-round. One of these activities is “Pickin’ In the Park,” a weekly series of informal old-time and bluegrass jam sessions hosted by Augusta every Wednesday night. The Augusta Festival is the final weekend that caps off the summer session. It is a wonderful celebration of traditional dance, crafts, and music and is attended by thousands.

Barbour County Historical Museum showcases this museum and other town attractions.

The Tygart Flyer provides a scenic train ride along the river.

Blackwater Falls is about a seventy-five-mile drive, but a huge state park with hiking trails, dining, and beautiful waterfalls.

Canaan Valley State Park offers mountain biking, hiking, climbing, camping, golf on the 4-star Geoffrey-Cornish golf course, tennis, summer chairlift rides, skiing and skating in Winter, hayrides, and geocaching.
